10 March 2023After a massage, most people feel great, however, many people fail to realize that what they do after a massage can affect the results they receive from the session. In this post, I will discuss a handful of things you should not do after a massage therapy to ensure you get the full benefits of your session.
Not drinking enough water
One of the most crucial things you should do both before and after a massage is to drink plenty of water. Massage therapy can release toxins from your body, and drinking water helps to flush them out of your system. Drinking water also helps to rehydrate your muscles, which can prevent soreness and stiffness after the massage. As a general rule, aim to drink at least 8 glasses of water after your massage. I’ve written a big blogpost that dives deeper into the science behind bodywork and water, you can read that here.

Taking a shower immediately
While it may be tempting to take a shower immediately after a massage, it's not advisable. Your body needs time to rest and relax after the massage, and taking a shower can interfere with this process. Also, the massage oil used during the session can help to moisturize your skin, and washing it off too soon can remove the beneficial oils. Wait at least an hour after your massage before taking a shower.
Taking hot shower
Taking a hot shower or bath after a massage can be detrimental to your results. Hot water can cause your muscles to contract, which can cause soreness and stiffness. Instead, opt for a warm shower or bath, which can help to relax your muscles without causing any harm.
Eating a large meal
Eating a large meal immediately after a massage can be counterproductive to the relaxation you just experienced. Your body needs time to digest the food, and eating a large meal can make you feel sluggish and bloated. Instead, opt for a light, healthy snack that will provide your body with the energy it needs without making you feel uncomfortable.
Drinking coffee
Caffeine can interfere with your body's ability to relax after a massage. It can also dehydrate you, which can cause soreness and stiffness. Instead, drink plenty of water or herbal tea or coconut water to help your body relax and flush out toxins.
Drinking alcohol
Drinking alcohol after a massage can be harmful to your body. Alcohol can interfere with your body's ability to relax and can dehydrate you, which can cause soreness and stiffness. It's best to avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours after your massage. For the same reason you should skip alcohol prior to massage.
Stressing yourself Out
After a massage, it's important to take some time to relax and unwind. Stressing yourself out with work or other activities can undo the relaxation you just experienced. Instead, take a relaxing bath, read a book, or do some gentle stretching to help your body continue to unwind. My loft in Ede is on the doorstep of the Veluwe and litary at the end of my street the forest starts, so you can perfectly combine a treatment with reconnecting with nature.
Forget to stretch
Stretching after a massage can help to prevent soreness and stiffness. Your muscles are warm and loose after the massage, making it the perfect time to stretch. I may give you some “homework stretches” to do at home, so make sure you do them regularly to keep your muscles loose and relaxed.
Not doing the homework I’ve given you
I may give you some homework to do after your massage, such as stretches, yin yoga poses or self-massage techniques. It's important to follow these instructions to help you get the most benefit from your massage. If you're not sure about the homework, ask me for clarification.
Rest and recover
Take it easy for the rest of the day. Avoid strenuous activities and allow your body to rest and recover. Even though you mostly just have been receiving, while laying down, for your body a massage treatment is like a workout, and after working out you need the body to give it time to rest and recover. Wear loose, comfortable clothing to prevent any unnecessary pressure on your muscles.
As you can see, it’s all not rocket science and all of the above are easily done. Let’s work together to make you archive your health goals.
