What to expect during a sports massage
Every sports massage session follows four steps, from assessment to aftercare advice. So you know exactly what to expect when you walk in.
Intake and assessment
We discuss your training schedule, any complaints and your goals. I assess your posture and mobility to determine where the session should focus.
Warm-up and mobilisation
With long, flowing strokes (effleurage) I warm up your muscles and get the circulation moving. This prepares your body for deeper work.
Targeted work
Using petrissage, friction and trigger point therapy I work on the specific problem areas. Knots, adhesions and muscle spasms are released one by one.
Integration and advice
We close with calming techniques. I send you home with personalised stretching and recovery tips. Shower available. You leave ready for your next training session.
What is sports massage?
Sports massage is a targeted, therapeutic technique developed specifically for people who regularly put their body under load. Whether you're a competitive athlete, run three times a week or do intensive CrossFit, sports massage focuses precisely on the muscle groups you use hardest.
During the session I combine five core techniques: effleurage (long, warming strokes), petrissage (kneading and compression), friction (targeted pressure on adhesions and scar tissue), tapotement (rhythmic percussion to activate muscles) and trigger point therapy (targeted pressure on pain points). Which techniques I use and how deep I work depends entirely on what your body needs.
Research shows that sports massage accelerates muscle recovery after exertion, improves circulation and can reduce the risk of injury. By stimulating lymphatic flow, waste products are cleared more quickly, reducing DOMS and getting your body ready sooner for the next effort.

When to get a sports massage?
Before, during, after, or simply because your body deserves it.
Pre-game
Ready to win
Athletes need to warm up before a match. A pre-game sports massage improves your performance and flexibility and reduces the risk of injury.
Post-game
Recovery and recharge
After the match your muscles are tense and tired. A sports massage reduces inflammation, pain and discomfort and promotes faster recovery through deep tissue massage, stretching and trigger point therapy.
In between
Keep your body moving
During the break you can get a short sports massage. This helps tired muscles recover and prevents cramps.
Passive recovery
Back in the game
Temporarily on the sidelines because of an injury? This massage keeps your body fit and prevents stiffness and fatigue from inactivity.
Daily life
Not just for athletes
More of an office Olympian than a top athlete? Sports massage also helps your muscles relax and recover, giving you more mobility and freedom of movement in daily life.

What clients say about sports massage
I train five times a week and had constant trouble with my hamstrings. After two sessions with Michalis the difference was enormous. He knows exactly where to focus and adjusts the pressure perfectly. Highly recommended for serious athletes.
Best sports massage I've had in the Netherlands. Michalis really understands the body of an athlete. I travel from Amsterdam specifically for his sessions. The combination of deep work and recovery tools like cupping makes all the difference.
After every marathon I go to Michalis. By now he knows my body and knows exactly which muscle groups need extra attention. The studio is wonderfully quiet and you can have a shower afterwards. Perfect.
I sit at a desk all day and do CrossFit as an outlet. Michalis combines sports massage with targeted work on my neck and shoulders. Two birds, one stone. I walk out feeling reborn every time.
I combine my forest runs near Ede with a sports massage at Michalis. The location right next to the Veluwe is perfect. He gives incredibly targeted work and always has useful recovery tips. Highly recommend!
Fantastic sports massage. Michalis takes the time for a proper intake, looks at your posture and then works very precisely. Not a standard treatment, but real bespoke work. My knee complaints have improved significantly.

Frequently asked questions about sports massage
Not at all. Sports massage is for anyone who regularly puts their body under load, whether through sport, physical work, or long hours sitting at a desk. The techniques I use are just as effective for someone with neck and shoulder tension from office work as for a marathon runner with tight hamstrings. If your muscles are under strain, sports massage can help.
For targeted work on one problem area, such as knees or shoulders, 60 minutes is often enough. With 90 minutes I have room for a thorough full-body sports massage, including all the relevant muscle chains. It takes at least 45 minutes for your nervous system to genuinely settle, so if you want recovery and relaxation alongside the focused work, I'd recommend a longer session. My pricing is structured so that longer sessions are better value per minute, making it easier to choose yourself.
It depends on your goal. A pre-game sports massage, one to two days before a competition or event, improves circulation, increases flexibility and prepares your muscles for performance. A post-game massage, 24 to 48 hours after exertion, focuses on recovery: reducing soreness, clearing waste products and preventing stiffness. Regular maintenance massages between training sessions are most effective for long-term injury prevention.
Sports massage is not recommended in cases of fever, contagious skin conditions, serious heart disease, recent surgery, fractures, acute inflammation or haematomas. After an acute injury I wait at least 72 hours before working on the area. If you are pregnant, have a blood clotting disorder or are taking blood thinners, please consult your doctor first. It is your responsibility to inform me of any medical conditions or injuries before treatment.
Sports massage can be more intense than a relaxation massage, but it should never be unbearable. The intensity depends on your situation: after a marathon I work with less pressure than during a maintenance session in the middle of your training season. During the session I use a scale system so you can learn what works for you. You are always in control. The goal is therapeutic intensity, not pain.
Deep tissue massage targets chronic tension and pain in the deeper muscle layers, regardless of the cause. Sports massage is more specific: I take into account your sport, your training schedule and your competition calendar. The techniques overlap in part, but with sports massage I also use activating techniques such as tapotement and specific stretching protocols. I also provide personalised recovery advice. Not sure which suits you best? Let me know and we can talk it through together.
