Giving a voucher as a business
Yes. A voucher redeemed at my studio is not a workplace provision, so the nil valuation of the Work Costs Scheme does not apply. It runs through the free allowance instead, the same route as a Christmas hamper or an anniversary gift.
Want the untaxed route at the workplace? Then a massage day at your office is the better fit. Many clients combine the two: a day on site, and vouchers for those who could not make it.
Yes. Given to a client or business contact, a voucher counts as a business gift. Against your profit, a sole trader, general partnership or professional partnership may deduct 80% of the cost. There is also a variant with a threshold of 5,700 euro, but hardly any freelancer reaches that in entertainment expenses.
VAT has its own limit: 227 euro per business relation per calendar year, excluding VAT. Below that you reclaim the VAT as normal; above it the deduction lapses for that relation. Gifts to the same person add up, as do gifts to several contacts within one company.
