What to expect during a deep tissue massage

Every deep tissue session follows four steps, from intake to integration. So you know exactly what to expect when you arrive.

1

Arrival and intake

We take time to talk through your complaints, your goals and your body. That way I know exactly where to focus.

2

Deep, slow movements

With slow, sustained pressure I work layer by layer deeper into your muscles. Scar tissue and adhesions dissolve, tension melts away.

3

Targeted work

I focus on your specific problem areas: knots, trigger points and spots of chronic pain. I work through them one by one.

4

Leave floating

Take your time to unwind with a cup of tea. Shower available. You leave lighter, looser and freer.

What is deep tissue massage?

What is deep tissue massage?

Deep tissue massage is a powerful therapeutic technique that targets the deeper layers of muscle tissue, tendons and fascia. Using slow, firm pressure I release adhesions that develop through injury, poor posture or overuse, so your body can move the way it was meant to.

During the session I use sustained, deep strokes that encourage your muscles, fascia and tendons to relax and realign. This helps reduce muscle spasms, improve circulation and increase your range of motion.

Scar tissue often forms as a result of injuries and can leave muscles tight and painful. Deep tissue massage helps break down this tissue and promote healing, partly by increasing collagen production and improving blood flow. The result is less inflammation and faster recovery.

Frequently asked questions about deep tissue massage

Deep tissue massage uses more pressure than other forms of massage, and that can sometimes feel uncomfortable, but it should never be unbearable. During the session I check in with you regularly and use a scale system so you learn what works for you. You're always in control: tell me to go lighter and I will, no questions asked. The goal is therapeutic intensity, not pain.

A relaxation massage uses long, flowing strokes to ease tension and help you unwind. Deep tissue massage goes a step further: with slower movements and sustained pressure I reach the deeper layers of your muscles and fascia. It's more targeted and therapeutic, focused on specific problem areas rather than general stress relief. Not sure which technique suits you? Let me know and we can work out together what would serve you best.

For targeted work on one area, such as shoulders or lower back, 60 minutes is often enough. I can either zoom in deeply on one problem zone or give an express full-body massage. With 90 minutes I have the space for a thorough full-body deep tissue treatment. It takes at least 45 minutes for your nervous system to truly settle, so if you want to surrender to the session and get the maximum therapeutic benefit, I'd recommend a longer session. My pricing is structured so that a longer session works out cheaper per minute, making it easier to choose yourself.

Deep tissue massage is not recommended in cases of: fever, contagious skin conditions, severe heart disease, recent surgery, fractures, acute inflammation or haematomas. If you are pregnant, have a blood clotting disorder or use blood thinners, please consult your doctor first. There are too many possible contraindications to list here, so it is your responsibility to inform me of any medical conditions or injuries before the treatment.

Some people experience mild soreness for 24 to 48 hours after deep tissue work, similar to how you feel after a good workout. This is completely normal and a sign that your body is recovering. Drink plenty of water, take it easy, and the soreness will pass. Most people feel significantly better within a day or two than they did before the treatment.

Absolutely. Deep tissue massage can reduce muscle soreness and stiffness, improve range of motion and increase blood flow to the muscles, all of which support recovery and performance. I'm also trained in sports massage, a specific modality focused on improving athletic performance and recovery.
